The best oil painting size is one that suits both the composition and the space where you will see it. Before ordering, measure the wall, try the artwork's footprint at full size and allow for the frame you plan to add. A few checks at home are more useful than judging scale from a product photograph.
1. Measure the space around the painting
Write down the usable width and height of the wall. Note windows, doorways, switches, shelves and nearby lighting. If the painting will sit above a sofa, bed or console, measure that furniture too: it provides a more useful reference than the width of the entire room.
Decide whether you want one painting to be the main focus or part of a group. Leave visible space around it so the arrangement feels intentional. There is no single proportion that works for every room; compare a few sizes before committing.
2. Test two sizes at full scale
Make a paper rectangle for each size you are considering, or mark the outline on the wall with removable tape that is safe for your wall finish. Test the tape in an inconspicuous place first. This lets you compare the real footprint without relying on a small screen.
View each outline from the doorway, your usual seat and a few steps back. Take a photograph of the whole wall with the furniture in view. Check whether the painting would feel crowded near a ceiling or light fitting, and whether people can sit or move nearby comfortably. A room mockup on a product page is a display example, not a measured plan of your room.

3. Check orientation and units
A horizontal composition may suit a wide wall or a family group. A vertical composition may fit a narrow space or an individual portrait. Keep the proportions of the artwork or reference photograph in mind: changing a rectangle into a square can require changes to the composition.
For scale, 16 × 24 inches is approximately 41 × 61 cm. In a horizontal arrangement, the longer side would be the width. Confirm which dimension is width and which is height on your chosen listing rather than assuming the order of the numbers. To convert inches to centimetres, multiply by 2.54.
For a practical example, look at the upright composition of Cot’s Springtime: the figures, swing ropes and trees need room within the picture. When comparing the available Springtime canvas sizes, keep the whole composition in mind and confirm the orientation before ordering.
4. Allow for stretching and the outer frame
At RomKart, my hand-painted oil paintings are supplied unframed and shipped rolled in a protective tube. Frames, stretcher bars and hanging hardware are not included. Plan local stretching and any decorative frame as part of the finished display.
The listed canvas size, the visible painted area and the outside dimensions of a finished frame are different measurements. Before ordering a frame, confirm with me what the selected size refers to and what canvas margins are available. Then ask your framer for the final outside dimensions. Use those dimensions for your wall test, especially in a tight space.
The guide to rolled canvas and framing explains what to discuss with a local framer before work begins.
5. Match the size to the subject
For a custom portrait, consider the number of people or pets, their placement and the background. Send your reference photos before ordering if you are unsure whether a composition will work at your preferred size. I prepare a composition preview for review before painting a custom portrait; the custom oil portrait ordering guide explains the process.
For a reproduction, start with the proportions of the original composition. If you need a different shape or a size that is not listed, contact me to discuss it before placing the order.
Your checklist before ordering
- Measure the usable wall space and nearby furniture.
- Compare at least two full-size outlines from your normal viewing positions.
- Confirm width, height, orientation and the meaning of the listed size.
- Allow for local stretching, the outer frame and installation.
Once you have a shortlist, browse oil painting reproductions or custom portraits. Send me the product link, your wall measurements and your preferred orientation if you would like help narrowing down the options.
